October Prayer of the Month

Act of Contrition
O my God, I am sorry for my sins.
In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good,
I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things.
I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance,
to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin.
Amen

At Mass with your Child

A new section. Each month we will offer tips and insight into attending Mass with children.

Helping Your Child (and You!) Enter into Mass
Going to Mass with children can sometimes feel overwhelming—but it doesn’t have to be. With small, purposeful steps, we can guide our children to participate in ways that help them grow in faith. And as they learn to enter into the Mass, we often find more peace and prayerfulness for ourselves, too.

Children are natural observers. If we are paying attention and participating at Mass, they will notice. If we aren’t, they’ll notice that, too. The best way to show them the importance of joining in the celebration of Mass isn’t with long explanations—it’s through our own actions. Our reverence and love for God in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will shine through, and our children will pick up on it.

Try this:
When Father elevates the Body of Christ, direct your eyes and focus to Jesus, and whisper the prayer, “My Lord and my God.”  When Father lowers the Body, bow your head and whisper, “Thank you, Lord, for this gift of Yourself.”  When Father elevates and lowers the Blood of Christ, do the same. If your child asks a question or tries to talk during these moments, gently wait until Father has finished—then see what they need. By keeping your attention on Jesus, you’re showing them that this is a sacred moment.

The more importance you place on prayer and participation, the more your children will recognize that something holy is happening, and follow your lead. Be consistent: some children will catch on and learn by watching you right away, while others may take a little longer.
