St. Martin de Porres

Martin de Porres grew up in poverty, the son of of a freed slave woman of Panama and a Spanish knight of Lima, Peru. He longed to join the Dominicans, but was not allowed to because he was black. But at 15 years old, he joined the order as a lay helper. After nine years, he was finally allowed to take his vows and become a Dominican lay brother. He lived with humility and a heart for serving others.
