November Prayer of the Month
At Mass with your Child
Each month we will offer tips and insight into attending Mass with children.
Helping Your Family Arrive at Mass with Peace We know it’s not always easy to get everyone to Mass, especially with children. Sometimes nothing seems to go right, and it can feel easier to skip Mass altogether. Those thoughts are common for parents with kids of all ages, but fortitude, or the ability to endure challenges for a good purpose, is part of living our faith. Coming every week, even when it is hard, helps your family build a habit of prioritizing God and will make the routine easier over time.
Every effort you make to prepare helps, even if it doesn’t go perfectly every time. Being prepared will take much of the stress out of the morning. Simple steps like laying out clothes the night before, packing bags ahead of time, and letting everyone know what time to be ready can help to turn the rush into a calm routine.
Make sure to plan extra time for your morning routine so you can arrive a few minutes early. This will give a chance to take a deep breath and settle in before Mass begins allowing everyone to feel peaceful and ready to focus on God. If things feel stressful—if someone forgot something, or kids are fussy, or you’re running late—remember that God meets us where we are. Pause, take a breath, and whisper a short prayer like, “Lord, help me be calm and present with my family.” You might even ask someone near you to pray for you. We are a church family, and we are here to support each other.
Try This: Ask the children to help you pick their clothes for church the night before and set them out or hang them in a chosen spot. Pack any bags and set a clear “wake-up time” and “ready time” for the morning. Remember: if the morning doesn’t go perfectly, come to Mass anyway, you are never alone, and we are here to pray and support each other.
Continue your faith journey at home and with our community. Fr Mark played this song at the adult gathering in November. Listen to it and think about how it makes you feel.
